A bridge is used when so little of the base of
a natural tooth is left that a post and core are a not feasible form of
treatment or when a tooth is completely missing. A
bridge may be used to fill a gap of up to four teeth if there are healthy
natural teeth on both sides of the gap. The new tooth, or teeth, is designed
to fit in the existing space and is anchored to the natural teeth on either
side. A bridge is a fixed appliance that your prosthodontist models in shape and color to match the tooth, or teeth, which is being replaced. You will normally need to visit your prosthodontist two or three times to complete the process, which begins with preparing the teeth flanking the gap to serve as the anchors of the bridge. Since it is our goal to create a bridge that will fit perfectly and leave a comfortable bite, we will take several impressions, which we will use to craft the appliance. Before you leave from the first appointment your prosthodontist will attach temporary crowns to the exposed teeth to protect them until the bridge is ready. During your second visit the appliance will be put in place to ensure a proper fit, and, assuming that there are no problems, your dentist will cement the bridge in place. Bridges are important because the space left by missing teeth can lead to more serious problems later on, such as healthy teeth shifting to fill the gap and becoming crooked. We go to great lengths to ensure that the crown or bridge will look and feel as natural as possible. Our dentists are dedicated to crafting a replacement that will match the color and shape of the patient's real teeth.
